yes! you're batt will be drain if it been sitting for a long period of time, such as clock, theft system, and keep alive system modules. This are what you called parasitc draw,so just remove you're negative battery terminal. if you plan to remove it from the car do not lay it on the ground cause it wil depleted the battery.
You will need a new alternator. Your battery may be salvagable, depends on how many times that bad alternator drained it. Have it tested at Autozone or Sears.

HIGHLY UNLIKELY that it woud die while driving! The alternator will continue to provide power when the battery is dead. You will probbly notice a harder and harder time to start the car in colder weather. They don't just drop dead like people.
